Znuny and Exchange: Keep DavMail or connect directly?
DavMail has operated reliably in our own email integrations for years. That experience is useful, but changes at the mail provider still need attention. Future plans depend on whether you run Exchange on premises or use Exchange Online.
What DavMail does
DavMail provides protocols including IMAP and SMTP as interfaces to Exchange, allowing applications to use familiar mail protocols. The DavMail project explains its architecture and supported connections.
This introduces another service between the ticket system and mail server. It needs updates, logging and connection monitoring. If traffic between Znuny and DavMail leaves the local machine, protect that connection too. The DavMail documentation provides guidance.
Exchange Online: Review EWS dependencies now
Microsoft is disabling EWS in Exchange Online in stages, beginning in October 2026, with full disablement scheduled for April 2027. This announcement concerns Exchange Online rather than on-premises Exchange Server. Consult Microsoft's current guidance for the authoritative details.
Check the access method actually in use. OAuth2 handles authentication; it does not by itself tell you whether the connection then uses EWS or Microsoft Graph. Successful authentication therefore does not establish that a connection is unaffected by EWS retirement.
Connecting directly as an alternative
Current Znuny documentation describes receiving and sending mail through Microsoft Graph with OAuth2. Check whether your installed release and configuration support this approach using the Znuny email documentation. Our experience with DavMail is not a comparative test of this direct connection.
For a migration, we recommend a separate test mailbox and end-to-end send and receive tests. Include attachments, non-ASCII characters, sender permissions and background processing. Coordinate the switch to prevent duplicate imports or messages being left in a queue.
The decision depends on your environment. A proven gateway does not need replacing simply because it has been in use for years. A retiring interface, however, needs a concrete migration plan. We can help review your existing setup and plan a suitable Znuny email connection.
